Insulation thermal class has two mutually independent ratings: the wire thermal class of the winding wire (evaluated under UL 2353 / IEC 62368-1 Annex J) and the thermal class of the insulation system (evaluated under UL 1446 / IEC 60085). A common design misjudgment is to take a single wire's thermal class as the thermal class of the transformer's insulation system—switching to a Class F triple insulated wire (TIW) and concluding that the whole transformer has moved up to Class F. This article uses the original wording of UL 1446 §1.2 and IEC 60085 to define the boundary between the two, and compares DAH JIN's public records for TLW-F (wire side) and DJ-130 (system side) to show where each lands when a specification "calls for Class F"; this is also the next step left unexpanded in Question 1 of the selection guide (B 130°C vs F 155°C).

1. Scope and Terminology
Scope and boundary. This article is limited to one matter: the attribution of thermal class ratings—clarifying that the same "Class F" belongs to two independent ratings on the wire side and the system side, each following its own evaluation path. The boundary condition is this: replacing a single winding wire component changes only the wire-side rating; it does not rewrite the existing insulation system's rating. Topics such as system ageing models and material compatibility are outside the scope of this article.
Operational definitions.
- Wire thermal class: the thermal class rated for the winding wire itself (component / material level), evaluated under UL 2353 / IEC 62368-1 Annex J; IEC 60085 refers to the object at this level as an Electrical Insulating Material (EIM).
- Insulation system thermal class (EIS): the thermal class rated for an Electrical Insulation System (EIS) composed of multiple insulating materials, evaluated under UL 1446 / IEC 60085.
- Reinforced (reinforced insulation): the evaluation category of the wire-side insulation construction.
- Approval Document: the document that, when a wire is adopted, defines the model and the wire diameter range.
- Authorization Letter: the document that the system holder must issue when a customer adopts the insulation system on record.
2. Standards Basis: UL 1446 §1.2 and IEC 60085
Each of the two thermal classification standards delimits its own object of application; a sentence-by-sentence comparison shows the boundary:
- UL 1446 (Electrical Insulation System, the US standard for EIS) states in its scope (§1.2) that what this standard evaluates is the insulation system and that these requirements "do not establish thermal ratings for … individual components". Therefore, the thermal class marking of a winding wire does not come from the insulation system standard.
- IEC 60085 (the standard for thermal classification of electrical insulation) names the two separately: the Electrical Insulation System (EIS) and the Electrical Insulating Material (EIM) are each assigned their own thermal class. The system class and the single-material class are two independent designations.
The line is therefore clear: the wire (component / material) and the insulation system each hold their own thermal class rating and each follow their own evaluation path; replacing one does not automatically rewrite the other.
3. Wire-Side Rating: TLW-F (Reinforced, 155°C)
TLW-F is the Class F item among DAH JIN's four external models (TLW-B, TLW-BB, TLW-B7S, TLW-F); its thermal class rating sits on the wire-side certification:
- UL side: the TLW-F entry under UL File E236542 is rated Reinforced, 155°C, per UL 2353 (Single- and Multi-Layer Insulated Winding Wire, current 3rd edition).
- VDE side: TLW-F is evaluated as Reinforced (reinforced insulation) via the wire path of IEC 62368-1 Annex J under VDE 40008834.
- Official website specification: the DAH JIN TLW-F product page states Thermal class: Class F (155°C).
What these three items certify is this winding wire itself; they constitute the wire thermal class rating and neither cover nor represent the thermal class of any insulation system.
4. System-Side Rating: DJ-130 (Class 130(B))
DAH JIN's only Electrical Insulation System (EIS) on record is DJ-130, which follows a separate certification path:
- File number and class: UL File E318181, System Designation DJ-130, System Class 130(B), filed under UL category OBJS2 (System Components, Electrical Insulation - Component) and searchable on UL Product iQ without logging in.
- Constituent components: the winding wire components of DJ-130 are TLW-BB and TLW-B7S.
- Condition of adoption: the system states "An Authorization Letter is Required for Adoption of this System"; a customer adopting it must obtain an Authorization Letter issued by DAH JIN.
One public fact must be stated alongside: TLW-F is not on the DJ-130 component list (the DJ-130 components are TLW-BB and TLW-B7S). This is the content of the UL public record itself—an objective statement of the scope of the record, not a judgment of product merit.
5. Decision Framework: Where "Specifying Class F" Lands
When a specification calls for Class F, the two ratings land as follows:
- Wire side: switching to TLW-F changes the wire-side thermal class rating (Class F, 155°C, via the IEC 62368-1 Annex J wire path and UL 2353). This step brings the winding wire itself to a Class F rating.
- System side: the thermal class of the insulation system is a separate rating. Per UL 1446 §1.2, the system class is not established by individual components; the class a system carries depends on the result of evaluating that system under UL 1446 / IEC 60085. DAH JIN's existing EIS record, DJ-130, is Class 130(B), with components TLW-BB / TLW-B7S.
The conclusion of the trade-off: if the design is to go for a "Class F insulation system," the correct landing is this—TLW-F provides the Class F wire rating (VDE Annex J / UL 2353 already in place), while the Class F insulation system is evaluated as a whole system by the customer under UL 1446 / IEC 60085. Replacing a single wire with TLW-F on its own will not rewrite the existing insulation system's rating to Class F, because the thermal class belongs to the insulation system's rating, not to a single wire.
6. Comparison Table and Coverage
Parameter comparison of the two ratings:
- Applicable standard — Wire thermal class:UL 2353 / IEC 62368-1 Annex J (wire);Insulation system thermal class:UL 1446 / IEC 60085 (EIS system)
- DAH JIN record — Wire thermal class:TLW-F: Reinforced, 155°C (UL E236542; VDE 40008834 Annex J);Insulation system thermal class:DJ-130: Class 130(B) (UL E318181)
- What it certifies — Wire thermal class:This winding wire itself;Insulation system thermal class:A system composed of insulating materials
- Component scope — Wire thermal class:Four models: TLW-B / TLW-BB / TLW-B7S / TLW-F;Insulation system thermal class:DJ-130 components: TLW-BB, TLW-B7S

When Class F is specified, the "covered by certification vs. confirmation by sample submission" split locates which side each item at hand falls on:
- TLW-F wire, Class F (155°C) — Covered by certification (current file number can be cited directly):✅ UL E236542 / VDE 40008834 Annex J;Confirmation by sample submission (not on the current record; the system must be evaluated under UL 1446 / IEC 60085):—
- DJ-130 system, 130(B) — Covered by certification (current file number can be cited directly):✅ UL E318181;Confirmation by sample submission (not on the current record; the system must be evaluated under UL 1446 / IEC 60085):—
- Class F insulation system — Covered by certification (current file number can be cited directly):—;Confirmation by sample submission (not on the current record; the system must be evaluated under UL 1446 / IEC 60085):The customer must evaluate the whole system under UL 1446 / IEC 60085
7. Engineering Criteria
- When a specification says "Class F," first determine whether the requirement lands on the wire side or the system side: on the wire side, citing TLW-F's UL E236542 / VDE 40008834 (Annex J) is sufficient; on the system side, an insulation system rating under UL 1446 / IEC 60085 is required.
- Before citing a current DAH JIN file number, check its scope: DJ-130 is Class 130(B) with components TLW-BB / TLW-B7S, excluding TLW-F; TLW-F is a wire-side Class F rating, not a system rating.
- When Class F "system" certification is needed, the path is for the customer to evaluate the whole system under UL 1446 / IEC 60085; for case-specific evaluation paths, contact our sales team.
- The wire-side UL / VDE file numbers and the DJ-130 system number are all printed on the official website and in the documents and can be checked on your own; see What is UL 2353? and The four links of the certification chain for how.
Frequently Asked Questions
The specification calls for Class F. If all of the transformer's winding wires are changed to TLW-F, is the transformer a Class F system?
Switching to TLW-F changes the wire-side thermal class rating (Class F, 155°C). The insulation system's thermal class is a separate rating: per UL 1446 §1.2, the system class is not established by individual components; the insulation system must be evaluated under UL 1446 / IEC 60085. The wire rating and the system rating stand separately, and replacing a single component does not automatically rewrite the system rating.
Does DAH JIN have a Class F insulation system that can be cited directly?
The EIS DAH JIN currently has on record is DJ-130 (E318181, Class 130(B)), with components TLW-BB / TLW-B7S; TLW-F is not on this list (UL public record). If the design requires Class F "system" certification, what TLW-F provides is the Class F wire rating (VDE Annex J / UL 2353); the evaluation of a Class F system is carried out by the customer under UL 1446 / IEC 60085.
The wire is 155°C and the system is marked 130(B). Do the two conflict?
No. They are two different ratings. IEC 60085 itself assigns thermal classes separately to the Electrical Insulation System (EIS) and the Electrical Insulating Material (EIM); UL 1446 likewise states explicitly that it does not establish thermal ratings for individual components. The wire's 155°C certifies this wire; the system's 130(B) certifies DJ-130, this combination of insulating materials. Each rating can be looked up on its own and each stands on its own.
