A transformer often serves more than one end application. The same design may be required to comply with IEC 62368-1, IEC 61558-1 and IEC 60601-1 at the same time; and each of these three standards governs the type tests for triple insulated wire (TIW) in its own normative annex—Annex J, Annex K and Annex L. For the product safety engineer responsible for wire selection, two things need confirming before any work begins: are the "test items" required by the three annexes the same set? And are the "parameters" (working voltage, peak voltage, frequency) the same across the annexes? Both are prerequisites that must be settled before selecting a wire.
1. Problem and Boundary
Taking DAH JIN's four TIW models as its subject, this article organizes the correspondence of "four type tests × subclauses of the three annexes," together with "the evaluation parameters per model under each annex," into two cross-referenceable comparison tables, and closes with the wire selection criteria. Boundary: this article deals only with the wire-side type test items and their evaluation parameters; the routine tests at the finished-product / end-product level (see Section 6) fall outside the scope of this article's four wire type tests.
2. Scope and Data Currency
- Standard editions: IEC 62368-1 Annex J, IEC 61558-1 Annex K, IEC 60601-1 Annex L, each a normative annex of its respective standard.
- Evaluation data: VDE 40008834; the evaluation results per model are compiled in Anlage 200, with data current as of the 2025-04-25 updated version; for design decisions, the latest VDE certificate prevails.
- Models covered: DAH JIN's four models TLW-B, TLW-BB, TLW-B7S, TLW-F.
- Not covered: routine tests at the end-product level (see Section 6), and annex subclause numbers whose first-hand full text has not yet been obtained verbatim (see the "to be verified" markers).
3. Operational Definitions
So that both comparison tables can be read correctly, the conventions adopted in this article are fixed first:
- Type test: a one-time qualitative test on the wire side, evaluated once by the wire manufacturer (DAH JIN) under VDE 40008834, with the results recorded in the Approval Document and the VDE certificate; the end-product level then cites them under its own annex.
- Triple insulated wire (TIW): the wire under test itself.
- Evaluation parameters (working voltage / peak voltage / frequency): the parameters recorded in the per-model evaluation under each annex; the specific values are per the DAH JIN Approval Document and the VDE certificate, and this article does not re-list them item by item.
- "Same test item names, parameters per annex": the names and subclauses of the four type tests in the three annexes correspond one to one, but each annex's parameters such as working voltage and its range of applicable models are evaluated separately and are not equal merely because the items share a name.
- Scope of evaluation: whether a given model is listed for evaluation under a given annex; models not listed are marked in the tables as "not within the scope of evaluation under Annex X".
- To be verified: the corresponding first-hand full text has not yet been obtained verbatim; to avoid entering unverified subclause numbers or titles, the marker "〔title to be verified〕" or "Annex L subclause to be verified" is used throughout.
4. Decision Framework: Two Independent Tickets
That the test "items" correspond does not mean the parameters and model ranges of the annexes are the same. IEC 62368-1 Annex J and IEC 61558-1 Annex K are two independent tickets: passing one does not automatically mean passing the other. The product safety engineer's reading order when selecting a wire is therefore:
- Which path: which standard / annex (Annex J / K / L) applies to the end product.
- Is the model listed: whether the target model is listed within the scope of evaluation under that annex.
- Do the parameters match: whether the working voltage / peak voltage / frequency of that model under that annex cover the design requirement.
- Who evaluates, how to cite: the four wire type tests are evaluated once by the wire manufacturer (DAH JIN) under VDE 40008834 and recorded in the Approval Document and the VDE certificate; the end-product level then cites them under its own annex.
The model × annex applicability is consistent with this site's explanation of the safety standard paths.
5. Comparison Tables
5.1 Four Type Tests × Annex J / K / L Subclauses
The table of contents of the type tests in IEC 62368-1 Annex J reads verbatim: J.2.2 Electric strength, J.2.3 Flexibility and adherence, J.2.4 Heat shock, J.2.5 Retention of electric strength after bending. IEC 61558-1 Annex K maps the type tests for winding wire one to one with the same subclause numbering (J.2.2–J.2.5 = K.2.2–K.2.5); a verbatim comparison against the official preview table of contents confirms all four correspondences, with K.2.2 titled Dielectric strength test in the table of contents. In other words, the two standards require the same set of four type test items, while each annex's parameters and range of applicable models are evaluated separately.
- ① — Test item (title per IEC 62368-1 Annex J table of contents):Electric strength;IEC 62368-1 Annex J subclause:J.2.2 Electric strength;IEC 61558-1 Annex K subclause:K.2.2 Dielectric strength test;IEC 60601-1 Annex L subclause:Annex L subclause to be verified
- ② — Test item (title per IEC 62368-1 Annex J table of contents):Flexibility and adherence;IEC 62368-1 Annex J subclause:J.2.3 Flexibility and adherence;IEC 61558-1 Annex K subclause:K.2.3〔title to be verified〕;IEC 60601-1 Annex L subclause:Annex L subclause to be verified
- ③ — Test item (title per IEC 62368-1 Annex J table of contents):Heat shock;IEC 62368-1 Annex J subclause:J.2.4 Heat shock;IEC 61558-1 Annex K subclause:K.2.4〔title to be verified〕;IEC 60601-1 Annex L subclause:Annex L subclause to be verified
- ④ — Test item (title per IEC 62368-1 Annex J table of contents):Retention of electric strength after bending;IEC 62368-1 Annex J subclause:J.2.5 Retention of electric strength after bending;IEC 61558-1 Annex K subclause:K.2.5〔title to be verified〕;IEC 60601-1 Annex L subclause:Annex L subclause to be verified
Table notes:
- The four titles in Annex J (62368-1), the subclause number correspondence in Annex K (61558-1) and the title of K.2.2 are all taken verbatim from the official IEC preview table of contents. The table-of-contents titles of K.2.3–K.2.5 have not been obtained verbatim from the available first-hand sources and are provisionally marked "〔title to be verified〕", to be filled in once the full text of 61558-1 Annex K is obtained.
- For the four corresponding subclause numbers in Annex L (60601-1), no first-hand full text is yet available to transcribe verbatim, so they are uniformly marked "Annex L subclause to be verified"; this site lists no Annex L clause number that has not been verified first-hand. The evaluation "results" under Annex L (working voltage and other parameters) are covered separately in Section 5.2, the per-model evaluation under VDE 40008834 Anlage 200.
5.2 Scope of Evaluation per Model × Annex
Although the test items correspond one to one, the evaluation parameters (working voltage / peak voltage / frequency) are evaluated separately per annex and per model, and their specific values are per the DAH JIN Approval Document and the VDE certificate. The table below lists, for DAH JIN's four TIW models, the scope of evaluation under each annex (which model is evaluated under which annex), the certified wire diameter range and the thermal class; for the evaluation parameters under each annex, such as withstand voltage, refer to the Approval Document or request them from our sales team:
- TLW-B — Certified wire diameter (mm):0.10–1.00;Annex J (62368-1):Within scope of evaluation;Annex K (61558-1):Within scope of evaluation;Annex L (60601-1):Not within scope of evaluation;Thermal class:130(B)
- TLW-BB — Certified wire diameter (mm):0.10–1.00;Annex J (62368-1):Within scope of evaluation;Annex K (61558-1):Within scope of evaluation;Annex L (60601-1):Within scope of evaluation (two levels: 2 MOOP / 2 MOPP);Thermal class:130(B)
- TLW-B7S — Certified wire diameter (mm):0.10–0.30 (stranded);Annex J (62368-1):Within scope of evaluation;Annex K (61558-1):Not within scope of evaluation;Annex L (60601-1):Within scope of evaluation (two levels: 2 MOOP / 2 MOPP);Thermal class:130(B)
- TLW-F — Certified wire diameter (mm):0.10–1.00;Annex J (62368-1):Within scope of evaluation;Annex K (61558-1):Not within scope of evaluation;Annex L (60601-1):Not within scope of evaluation;Thermal class:155(F)
Table notes:
- The scope of evaluation is taken from VDE 40008834 Anlage 200 (updated 2025-04-25); the per-model working voltage / peak voltage / frequency and other evaluation parameters under each annex are in all cases per the DAH JIN Approval Document and the VDE certificate; this table does not re-list specific values.
- The two protection levels 2 MOOP / 2 MOPP of the medical path (Annex L) are bound only to TLW-BB and TLW-B7S; TLW-B and TLW-F are not within the scope of evaluation under Annex L. The withstand voltage values corresponding to each level are per the Approval Document.
- The model × annex applicability (which model is evaluated under which annex) is consistent with this site's explanation of the safety standard paths; for design decisions, the latest VDE certificate prevails.
- TLW-BB and TLW-B7S are also included in DAH JIN's EIS insulation system DJ-130 (UL E318181, System Class 130(B)); adopting that system requires an Authorization Letter (An Authorization Letter is Required for Adoption of this System).
6. How the End-Product Level Cites It: The Wording in the CB Test Report
Once the four wire type tests have been completed once by the wire manufacturer (DAH JIN) under VDE 40008834 and recorded in the Approval Document and the VDE certificate, the end product's safety report can cite them directly. In practice, in the end product's CB Test Report, under the clause corresponding to IEC 62368-1 Annex J ("Insulated winding wires for use without interleaved insulation"), the safety test laboratory directly judges an already approved / listed TIW as passing, with no additional wire testing. The original wording reads, for example:
"Approved TIW used. See list of critical components. No additional testing considered required." — GlobTek's IEC 62368-1 CB Test Report, Annex J clause
Another CB Test Report issued by TÜV SÜD (Advanced Energy / Artesyn LPS10x-M, Report No. 211-21180290-000) likewise writes "Approved TIW used" under the corresponding clause. This shows that what the end-product level cites is the wire's certification coverage, so when selecting a wire, be sure to confirm first: which standard / annex path the end product follows, and whether the target model is listed within the scope of evaluation under that annex.
Routine tests at the finished-product / end-product level, such as dielectric withstand (Hi-pot) and partial discharge, belong to a different layer; they are determined by the standard applicable to the end product and fall outside the scope of the four wire type tests in this table.
7. Wire Selection Criteria
The converged conclusions for product safety engineers:
- Fix the path first, then match the model: confirm which of Annex J / K / L the end product follows, then go back to Section 5.2 to check whether the target model is listed within the scope of evaluation under that annex; models not listed (e.g. TLW-B7S for Annex K, TLW-B / TLW-F for Annex L) must not be borrowed across annexes.
- Same item name does not mean same parameters: the four type test names correspond one to one, but the evaluation parameters and model ranges must be checked annex by annex (specific values per the Approval Document); the medical path additionally distinguishes 2 MOOP / 2 MOPP, which only TLW-BB / TLW-B7S carry.
- Citing requires complete credentials: the precondition for the end-product level to cite the wire certification and waive additional wire testing is that the target model is in fact listed within the scope of evaluation under the standard / annex the end product follows, with the DAH JIN Approval Document and the VDE certificate attached.
- The latest certificate prevails: the data in Anlage 200 is current as of 2025-04-25; for design decisions, the latest VDE certificate prevails.
Frequently Asked Questions
If 62368-1 Annex J is passed, is 61558-1 Annex K automatically passed?
No. The four type test items required by the two annexes correspond one to one, but they belong to separate standards, with separate evaluations and separate model coverage. Taking DAH JIN as an example, TLW-B7S is listed within the scope of evaluation under Annex J but not under Annex K; each must be confirmed against the standard applicable to the end product (see the explanation of the safety standard paths).
Are the working voltage parameters the same across the three annexes?
Same item names, parameters per annex, and specific values per the Approval Document. Taking the scope of evaluation as an example, Annex J and Annex K both cover TLW-B / TLW-BB; Annex L (60601-1) separately evaluates the two protection levels 2 MOOP / 2 MOPP and is bound only to TLW-BB / TLW-B7S—the applicable models and the withstand voltage values of each level all differ, and the specific values are per the DAH JIN Approval Document and the VDE certificate.
When the end product undergoes a CB report, do the wire's four type tests have to be redone?
If the end-product level uses an already approved / listed TIW, the safety report can cite the wire certification directly under the Annex J clause with no additional wire testing (CB report original wording: "No additional testing considered required."). The precondition is that the target model is in fact listed within the scope of evaluation under the standard / annex the end product follows, with the DAH JIN Approval Document and the VDE certificate attached.
Why are the Annex L subclause numbers left blank in the table?
Of VDE 40008834, DAH JIN currently holds only Anlage 200 (the evaluation "results" under Annex L are complete); the first-hand full text of the corresponding Annex L subclauses has not yet been obtained. To avoid entering unverified clause numbers, all four corresponding subclauses are marked "Annex L subclause to be verified" and will be updated once the full text is obtained.
